Volunteer Opportunities:

KITCHEN EVENTS/FUNDRAISER DINNERS

  • Help organize and coordinate the Centro’s cultural event like Dia de Los Muertos celebration, Earth Day, First Friday tabling. Volunteer in Centro Latino’s Kitchen to prepare meals to sell at community events and Fundraiser Dinners.

ESL or ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE CLASSES

  • Help tutoring English for our Spanish Speaking clients. English classes take place at Centro Latino on Monday evenings from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.

OFFICE ORGANIZATION/COMMUNITY CENTER MANAGEMENT

  • This includes filling, making flyers, and keeping the Centro’s office organized. Help us keeping our community center building clean, organized and ready for our ongoing programs and events!

AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING PROGRAM

  • Monday – Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 PM
    K-8 academic tutoring; transportation is provided for some of our students by volunteers. Healthy snacks, fruits and vegetables are provided to our students in collaboration with the local Food Bank.

VEGGIE FRIENDLY KIDS IN THE KITCHEN/FITASTIC

  • Students in the After School Program participate in Veggie Friendly Kids in the Kitchen, a program of MU Extension, and Fitastic, a program of the local Health Department, which promote healthy eating and exercise.

BeAWARE

ACTIVE & FRESH SUMMER PROGRAM

  • Centro Latino’s  Summer Program: Active and Fresh is held for 4 week in July, Mondays through Thursdays from 12:00-4:00 pm. The focus of the program is to promote exercise through activity and good nutrition through healthy meals. Each day our participants will do a fun and energetic activity, like walking to Douglass Pool and swimming, then return to Centro Latino for a nutritional meal provided by volunteers.

GRANTWRITING AND FUNDRAISING

  • Centro Latino is always looking for dependable and skilled writers. Energetic people who woul like to organize events to raise funds.

VOLUNTEER COORDINATION

  • Keep in touch with volunteers and recruit new volunteers. Work with the Office of Service Learning.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

  • We need Spanish speaking volunteers to go into the community and distribute Centro Latino information to different agencies such as Health Department, Columbia Schools, pharmacies and other offices. Interaction with the Tutoring program parents is a must, as a community outreach intervention.

SPANISH CLASSES

  • Once a week Spanish classes, Tuesdays from 5:00pm to 6:00pm. This classes are $10 a class. Centro Latino volunteers can come to the classes for free.

COMMUNITY GARDENS*

  • Thank you to all who participated in the Ash St. Community Garden maintaining Centro Latino’s plots and the Good Neighbor Garden project! *Please contact Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture to get involved in Community Gardening in Columbia.
